The Best: Autumn Corn Mazes
Leaves are changing color, the air has grown crisp and days are growing shorter. Fall has finally arrived, bringing with it all of the magic the season has to offer. And one of the best fall activities has to be a trip through a corn maze.
We asked KOA campers on Facebook which corn mazes they enjoyed most—and that they’d recommend to others. As usual, they had a lot of great suggestions. One of our personal favorites has to be the Bluffton/Ft. Wayne South KOA—which features its very own amazing corn maze right on the campground. Book your visit now.
Here’s what our campers loved:
KOA fan Sonnet Fitgerald loves Apple Jack Orchards in Delano, Minnesota. “The whole farm is a GREAT stop,” she said, “with pick your own berries and apples, hay rides, animals, and an ‘apple cannon’ that shoots apples at targets across the field! We live in the area and LOVE it!”
Lisa Berndt Schade suggested Jacob’s Corn Maze in Traverse City, Michigan. Jacob’s Farm has been owned by the Witkop family for over 100 years and is a designated “Centennial Farm”. The corn maze, which began in 2008, has three paths ranging from just .2 miles to 2.9 miles—making it perfect for people of all ages.
If you’re near Gardner, Kansas, kamper Cindy Clark Barta says that you need to visit the KC Pumpkin Patch and Corn Maze. This year’s maze pays homage to Kansas City Royals baseball, and there are a lot of other activities, too, including a mining sluice, gourd gun shooting, a zip line and more.
Visiting Winnipeg, Manitoba? If the answer is yes, Laurie Yaskiw says that a stop at Manitoba’s oldest corn maze is a must. Race through “A Maze in Corn” during the day, or go on a flashlight adventure after dark. You might also want to check out the haunted forest, which promises to deliver chills, thrills and scares galore.
“Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food” is the theme of the Lattin Farms Corn Maze in Fallin, Nevada. Recommended by Mary Morton-Johnson, this maze lets you find your way through trails of watermelon, strawberries, tomatoes and milk. While you’re at the farm, you can also take in the on-farm bakery, hayrides and pumpkin tower.
They say that everything’s big in Texas, and the maze at At’l Do Farms near Lubbock is no different. Dave Chasteen suggested a visit to this 12-acre field, which is celebrating its tenth year with a scarecrow-themed design. The nearby patch includes 100 glowing jack-o-lanterns carved with Disney characters, celebrities and fall themes. And for a snack, you can try some delicious roasting corn.
In New York, Jennifer Patten McLean says to make sure to schedule in a getaway at Liberty Ridge Farm in Schaghticoke. Play the passport game to help navigate you through the maze, or have navigational clues and maze info texted to your phone. There’s also “The Haunted Farmer’s House”, the “Forest of Fear” and “Brad’s Barnyard Adventure” to appeal to kids of all ages.
Bishop’s Pumpkin Farm in Wheatland, California is, according to Robert Horton, “Awesome fun for the whole family.” Take the corn maze challenge, and you could win prizes as you answer questions to find your way through the maze. While you’re there, you’ll have a ball riding the Coyote Mountain slide, pan for marbles, or ride the BPF Line Railroad.
Oregon Dairy in Lancaster, Pennsylvania is home to Stephanie Morrison-Summers’ favorite corn maze. “It’s a cow maze that is udderly fantastic” she wrote. “Be sure to stop in for breakfast; they serve you a homemade glazed donut and milk along with your breakfast order. And their chocolate milk is the best—made from the brown cows right on the farm.” In addition to the massive maze, there are also garden tractor barrel rides, pedal tractors, and a straw tunnel and toy box for kids.
Idaho’s original corn maze is located at the Farmstead in Boise, and is a favorite of kamper Rita Anderson. There are literally miles of trails in this 15-acre field which in 2010 has been sculpted to pay tribute to the state’s whitewater. Older visitors will enjoy the “Field of Screams”, and the whole family will love pig races and pony rides.
